Movie Review – X Files: I Want To Believe [ 4/10 ]

X Files: I Want To Believe. Really, I want to believe that there are still some stones that were left unturned after nine season and a movie almost a decade ago. I honestly want to believe that the 10 year long wait will not leave the X-Files fans disappointed. But as they say, if wishes were horses…

To sum it up even before getting in to the nitty gritty, X Files: I Want To Believe would have been better as a winter release rather than trying to stand shoulder to shoulder with summer block-busters like The Incredible Hulk or Iron Man. Perhaps it all boiled down to the fact that the second feature film for the sci-fi duo of Fox Mulder and Dana Scully is late by some five years, at least!

Even the trailer failed to impress me and I had this fear that this one will not be up to the mark. Sure its good to see Mulder and Dana together. Sure they fit back in to their roles with ease. Sure there is some good dialogue. You can’t take away the credit there. But other than that, it’s like eating a three day old pizza from your mom’s fridge. Now I know some people like their pizza old and cold and perhaps for the die hard fans of the series, this will not be much of a disappointment. For those who have been dreaming of seeing Mulder and Scully converse with Mulder’s light sarcasm and Scully’s logical reasoning, this is sure to be a good experiences. But if you are looking for an out of this world script and a plot that would keep you on the edge of your seat, you are not going to be happy with this.

I had hoped that the movie would pick somewhere from where it ended (the first one). Mulder is out of the FBI collecting newspaper clippings and Dana Scully is working at a hospital. She is contacted for her and Mulder’s assistance in a case that is right out of the C.S.I crime drama so to speak. Sorry, but there are no little green men or abductions to speak of. I guess all the aliens left on that space ship at the end of the first movie. Sad. Also lacking is anything remotely supernatural. Sadder.

Back in 2007, when news started trickling about Chris Carter having finalized a kick ass script for a sequel and both David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson claiming to be super excited about it, perhaps the expectations went a bit too high. You wait ten years to deliver a sequel and it is bound to loose its edge. Not every franchise is a Star Wars you know.

Bare minimum action, an ordinary story, no green men and nothing amazing in the supernatural department. It is time to accept and move on: The X Files were good while they lasted. That was several years ago.

Carter might have thought he had it all figured out but he has really screwed this over. The image it took nine seasons to build might go down because of this. A real disappointment.

    It’s that bad??? :(

Say what you want but for the likes of us who have longed to see the two agents back together on screen it is all that matters. X Files is amazing.

  4. Kermit Says:

So if the movie is not about aliens and supernatural, what is it about? Dinosaurs?

  5. Robert Says:

If you are an X-Files fan, this is a journey worth taking with enough comforting familiarity to make it satisfying. If you know nothing about the X-Files, the film stands on its own well enough.

  6. Lalit Says:

It had the right strategy but Carter and co failed to commit to it. The movie jumps from one subplot to another in such awkward manner that its confusing.

The movie wasn’t that bad but it had some funny moments like Scully googles how to do stem cell surgery and actually does the procedure the very next day!
